SPORTS MASSAGE BLOG -'BUT I'M NOT VERY SPORTY'

by Saffron Blackwood - Sports Rehabilitator & Massage Therapist.

YOU DONT NEED TO BE AN ATHLETE TO BENEFIT FROM SPORTS MASSAGE!

As a Sports Massage Therapist it is very common to hear the phrase “I’m not an athlete, I can’t have a Sports Massage.” However, that is not the case! The misconception that Sports Massage is purely for athletes has been around for several years, stemming from it originally being a treatment for professional sportsmen and women to help with performance and recovery. So, the confusion is understandable. This aims to eliminate any mistaken beliefs so those who are not athletes can have an understanding of why Sports Massage would benefit them too!

Here are the top questions we get asked:

What is Sports Massage?

Sports Massage is the manipulation of soft tissue to help correct imbalances or problem areas within your muscles. These imbalances/problem areas can be as a result of repetitive or strenuous activities or trauma. This can include running, strength exercises at the gym, and even sitting at a desk!

Our Sports Massages focus on one or two areas in a session, with the therapist using various techniques to achieve the best outcome.

Is Sports Massage painful?

Everyone responds differently, and pain thresholds can vary from person to person.

The reason you would experience ‘pain’ or ‘discomfort’ during your massage treatment is because varying degrees of pressure must be applied to enable the massage to take effect and the benefits to be experienced. The pressure applied, through the therapists’ hands, forearms or even elbows, allows for the muscles to be manipulated and stretched, which can be uncomfortable. Experiencing discomfort during your massage is normal and means it is being effective. The therapist will use their expertise to ensure the right pressure is being applied. However, if it feels too much, then let your therapist know so they can alter it accordingly.

It is normal to feel tender and bruised after the treatment, with mild inflammation. This would usually last for up to 48 hours. Then afterwards, you should be feeling loose and relaxed!

How can Sports Massage help me?

Sports Massage has multiple benefits to suit everyone. These include:

  • Decreased tension

  • Decreased DOMS (Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness)

  • Increased flexibility

  • Increased blood flow/circulation

  • Increased feeling of well-being

  • Decreased anxiety

  • Decreased muscle fatigue

Just because you may not be an athlete, does not mean you cannot experience the huge benefits of Sports Massage!
